New Directions is always an interesting show. So many variables. The juror, the theme, the artists from all over the world.
In our Fifth year we reached out to David Bram, of Fraction Magazine, the new rising star in curating and supporting contemporary photography. His wish was to create a portrait show that sparked debate, made us think, and look into the soul of who we are, and he did not disappoint us.
From 300 artists submitting 1500 images, David selected 38 artists and images that gave us a unique view of ourselves. Joesef Woodard of the Santa Barbara News Press called the show “alternately edgy and cozy, a contemporary spin and sensuous collection”
We are thrilled to be able to showcase these talented artists and their ideas.
First – The Best of Show. Leon Alesi’s Mark has been selected by David Bram as the top image, exemplifying the idea of a “Moment of Being” Here is what he says about that image – Leon Alesi’s photograph “Mark” is a visually arresting image. The dramatic lighting and the glowing red mug and matching drapery really make the expressionless Mark stand out. I felt like I was having a very uncomfortable conversation with him.
As Best of Show, Blurb Publishing has generously donated a Book Certificate for Leon to get started publishing. We want to thank David, Leon & Blurb for being part of New Directions, and giving us so much great work to look at and participate in.
I am looking forward to whats next from Leon. Take a look at some additional images, and see what you think.
Thank you Christa and David! I am so proud to have been included in this show. A big well done to you both.
